Casa a Due Limoni | Toscany, Italy | 2024
Reconstruction and transformation of a historic house in Tuscany.
Casa a Due Limoni is conceived as a continuous sequence of interior and exterior spaces, reconnecting the existing building with the landscape through architecture, movement and daily use.
Spatial concept
The transformation is structured around a 20-metre-long enfilade of social spaces:
Living – Dining – Cooking. At both ends, this enfilade opens directly to the exterior:
to the southwest, towards the Living terrace;
to the northeast, towards a more intimate outdoor dining area. A new outdoor dining pavilion forms the heart of the exterior sequence, linking the existing house to the redesigned swimming pool and extending everyday life outdoors.
Kitchen and circulation
The kitchen is relocated to the opposite side of the house to take advantage of greater ceiling height and improved spatial continuity.
This move allows the removal of selected load-bearing partitions, creating space for guest toilets and a potential reception / entrance area.
The new kitchen position establishes a clear spatial axis connecting:
the original oven → service spaces (cleaning, laundry) → a new micro-trattoria at the far end of the building → the outdoor dining pavilion → the swimming pool.
Private zones
From the reception / entrance area, access is provided to the first private zone, housing Suite 1, and via a newly relocated staircase to Suite 2.
The dining area is positioned at the centre of the enfilade, between the kitchen and the Living room, and can be fully opened towards the central outdoor patio.
A key aspect of the project is the creation of a walkable central courtyard, formed by continuous paved surfaces that connect the individual wings of the house and make the exterior an integral part of the interior layout.
Living area
The Living space is conceived as a more intimate environment, located in the part of the building where the original brick arch exists.
The design respects the original footprint of the arch while amplifying its presence through new stone pillars on either side.
One side accommodates a new fireplace; the other provides access to the second private zone:
Suite 3 on the ground floor, and via a new sculptural staircase to the first floor, where Suites 4, 5 and 6 are located.
Accommodation
Suite 1 — ground floor (2 persons)
Suite 2 — first floor, in the tower above the oven (2 persons)
Suite 3 — ground floor, master suite with living area, larger bathroom and exterior connection (up to 4 persons)
Suites 4–6 — first floor above the Living area (total 6 persons)
